PENE is the Romanian plural for 'feather', 'quill', '(tire) failure' or 'blackout' – and, in what is already typical for the Somnoroase Păsărele (translatable as… 'Little Drowsy Birds'!) project, a title which gives the listener some metaphorical ground, all while the music itself is not what one would call predictable. Asymmetrical patterns seem to be the common thread in this suite of compositions which thrive beyond the formal logic of the academia (even though the second half reminds in some ways of the spectral music that Gili Mocanu has been performing lately as part of PFA Orchestra), into the territory of the visionary. Each composition maps a distinct atmosphere, but all of them occupy the altered spectrum of consciousness states. As the incessant loop in the background of the 4th piece should suggest, there is a hypnotic logic to these sonic realms that springs not from the mechanical, but rather from the biomorphic. Gili's electric birds now stand on their own feet – and this may be just a sneak beak on the back window of the laboratory into their lives…
